Redoing matte finish...anyone know how?

Hi,
      I have a 32H&R mag sixgun that has a matte finish.  I am considering a USFA that also has the matte finish.  I'd like to change the finish myself if possible.  Does anyone know how this is done?  So far I have read where one fellow did it by using Flitz and vinegar.  He gave no details, and I have not gotten a response to my inquiries.  I also read where getting rid of the matte gives the gun an "antique" look.  So if that's the case maybe someone knows how to "antique " a gun?  Thanks in advance!
