During the last years of Elmer's life in Salmon, the Sheriff was Bill Baker.....Bill had retired as sheriff in 1988 and died of cancer in 1995 at the young age of 68. I was told this story by one of Bill Baker's sons.

So one summer day in Salmon sheriff Baker gets a phone call from a neighbor of Elmer's.
Apparently, Elmer had threatened to shoot his dog the next time the dog took a crap on Elmer's lawn. We will call this neighbor Bob.

So Bob says "Sheriff, can Elmer shoot my dog just for crapping on his lawn??"
Sheriff Baker responds after some thought....."Well Bob, I have known Elmer a long time and I know him to be a man of his word. If Elmer says he will shoot your dog, then he will certainly do it. I would suggest that you keep your dog on your property."

So a couple weeks go bye and Sheriff Baker gets another call from Bob.
"Sheriff, Elmer just shot and killed my dog!! What are you going to do about it?"
Sheriff Baker told Bob that he would be right over.

So when the Sheriff arrives, Bob comes over to meet him and says...."He went and did it....he shot my dog!" The Sheriff replied..."Well, did your dog crap on his lawn?" "Yes" Bob replied, "but he did not have to shoot him!"

Bob asked the Sheriff if Elmer could legally do that and the Sheriff replied...."Let me go talk to Elmer."

Elmer was on his porch watching the Sheriff talk with Bob. When the Sheriff got over to Elmer he said "Did you shoot Bob's dog Elmer?" And Elmer said..... "Damn it Bill, I told him to keep that mutt off my lawn or I would shoot it!!"
"I know you said that Elmer and I wish you would not have done it" Sheriff Baker told him.

So while Bob is looking on Sheriff Baker tells Elmer "Now Elmer, I am going to issue you a citation for discharging a firearm within the City limits." And he hands Elmer the ticket.
"Now I don't expect that you will ever pay this fine, but I want Bob to see me hand it to you."

And that was that......harmony was sort of restored to the neighborhood!
