Made a trade with a friend and ended up with a Sharps repop.
Tayler and Co. import, Armisport.
32 inch barrel and HEAVY!
Already had a H&R Buffalo Clasic and a handy rifle in 45-70.
We have been loading Lee 405 gr. with 3031 and some with Trail Boss.
Try it out this week maybe.

Waiting for a Report

Would love a report on it along with how it shoots with various loads, especially the Trail Boss as I have a whole bottle of it. Chris

range report 45-70

Well, got out yesterday and put a dozen or so rounds down range. The sights are poor, ladder sight on the barrel with a slider that is loose or a very small knotch with the sight folded down, a miner problem as I have a 17a Lyman for the front and ladder to mount on the tang as soon as I make a new mounting plate.
Over all I like this gun, the set trigger seems good, weight over ten pounds, don't kick as bad as the Buffalo Clasic. yup, I like this  gun!!!
I did hit the clanger at 200 yds once ofhand (once out of several tries)
got to load some more rounds.

P.S. only tried one load, lee 405 gr. and 45 gr. 3031...

Trail Boss Powder

Well, got out this morning to try out the 45-70s.
My friend brought a H&R Buffalo Clasic and a Pedretti Sharps and I had my Buffalo Clasic and the Armisport Sharps.
The BCs were fun to shoot with the trail boss loads(13 g and 400 g Lee cast from wheel weights).
Just didn't seem worth the time to shoot those lite loads in the Sharps, it does'nt kick bad with the Springfield loads!
Just got to say we had a fine time.
O yes, we also shot a hornet and a 223, both single shots of course......

PS when we get some more time on the Sharps we may give a compareson of the two makes.

mild loads

Chris,
Yes, the trail boss loads were mild and easy on my shoulder, about 1000 ft a second.
I think all trail boss loads are mild.

question about powder

I know this is strange for me, but I have a question. A fellow died, and left me a bunch of reloading equipment, powders, ect. Some of the powders are marked 2520. It is a ball powder. He had put it in another container, typical for an old timer. Just trying to find out what I have. Looks like 296. Have not used it yet. Don't want to use it for fertilizer. not 2 pounds.

Good Guns, Good Friends, and Good Whiskey. I beleive Skeeter was on to something.

2520

Hi Gunsmith
I looked up powder burn rates online and found a chart for most powders.  2520 was next slower than 4064, so sounds like a rifle powder.
even my old manuals don't show it.

45-70 load

Have 6 45-70s from trapdoors to modern Sharps. This load works fine in all of em. 500 gr. Lyman in front of 28grs. 4198. Runs about 1175 same as black powder original loads, and shoots very well.
