unbelieveable

9mm and that sight? Sight would completely obscure balloon, as well as most of the backstop at 1000 yards, trajectory would be in the 100 foot range....
That guy's good. (Or sumptin' aint right)

Hold Over?

He mentions how high he had to hold above the target, something like 80 feet???? or some such height. My question is how does a shooter determine what 80 feet holdover is? I am certain he took a few practice shots to figure that out! But. there is no denying he knows how to shoot. Chris S

"Possible with a probability of Zero"

I would never say it didn't happen, however the challenges of making such a shot would be difficult to overcome.
If you could estimate 80' of holdover at 1000 yards you sure couldn't see the target. The Keith method of long range sighting has the target perched on the front sight and the rear sight lowered to maintain alignment and target visibility with increasing levels of elevation. I don't see how that would be possible with a reflex sight. Is it possible there could have been that much elevation dialed into the sight prior?
Vortex Razor's (reported sight used) elevation adjustment range 170 MOA so 80'  elevation doesn't seem to far out of the question.
Razor specs min 3.5 max 7 MOA Dot size. The Balloon looked like about 2MOA (20" / 1000 yards?)

One sight-in shot and second one on target? That's Sniper/ Spotter/ Scoped rifle kind of shooting. I know this isn't the Elmer Keith Forum, but really?
To be clear, I'm not denying it happened, just pointing out what it would take. He still had a few rounds left in the clip, a proof shot would have shut me up if it hit anywhere on the backstop.

Better to be lucky then good, and the master seems to be both lucky and good!

I can't See That Far!

I don't think I can see a target 1000 yards away, even with my glasses on!!!!!! I was just being funny there AL, you are such a disbeliever! I think Ole Jerry has practiced so much with a handgun it's part of his right hand and a 1000 yards is just a walk in the park for him. His whole family is well acquainted with shooting, even his daughter is an ace shooter. I want you out at the range bright and early shooting balloons at 1K and I want pics too! Chris S

In the April 1960 issue of

In the April 1960 issue of Guns magazine Elmer Keith described shotting the new Colt Buntline in 22 Magnum at a car fender at 400 yards. Elmer reported the sights on the handgun were poor and the front sight was wider than the fender but with a few sighter shots he was able to hit the fender.
a few Months before Elmer found it easier to shoot the 6" S&W "K-22 Magnum" at the same fender and reported the sights made the shooting easier.
I was raised in new Mexico and you can see very well in the high altitude and clear air.
