I have a NOS 2nd generation SAA .45 Long Colt cylinder that I think is out of spec. It is too long to to fit in the frame of my revolver. My smith says it will need serious modification to install. It is a Colt cylinder with the pony stamp.Anyone ever encounter this problem ? I don't want to bugger up the cylinder , which is in nice shape otherwise.
Out of Spec cylinder ?

Are you positive it is a Colt original factory cylinder and of the correct generation for your Colt? I can't imagine right off why it would be too long if it is factory but I suppose mistakes happen. What is in the revolver now? I don't know that much about Colt specs from one series to the next but I think the 1st and 2nd generations are much the same but not sure about third generation and now the latest ones? I would compare it to your original cylinder and see what looks different. Not much help but maybe someone else will chime in soon. Good luck. Chris S
Thanks, Chris. It has Colt markings on the back of the cylinder, and quality wise it loks legit. I have the origianl cylinder but the chambers are rough. My smith is going to polish them and try to fix the problem (cases sticking to the chamber walls). I bought this NOS cylinder to replace the worn one, so assumed it was correct. I don't have the gun or cylinders , still at the smiths. When I get them back I'll post some measurements and see if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks again. new to this forum hope to learn and share.

I've never heard of this problem. R.U. sure the problem isn't with the removable bushing? Remember, the bushing is what establishes headspace and proper recoil shield spacing. Yes, the 1st and 2nd generation SAAs are identical, because they were made on the same machinery.
3rd generation was a whole different ballgame, and now, the SAA/New Frontier has completely redesigned hand and action, really making this the 4th generation. Apparently they have followed ruger(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and made a system where the click does not locate the ejector rod on removing spent cases. Gotta love the brain dead bean counters. Right up there with politicians for the award of the worst of humanity.
Wonder-if the cylinder is too long if it is a genuine Colt manufacture, or if it is a clone, ripoff, or worse.
Intriguing. If the cylinder in question is a ripoff it's a well made one. And the bushing I'm using came from the original cylinder that came on the pistol. Can't do anything til I get it back from the smith. Wil post some photos and measurements then.
