Looking to buy a new .44 special.
I have heard good things about the Colt New Frontier and have read Mr Taffin's article.
Also heard good reports on USFA.
Even considering a custom one by Gary Reeder

For what it's worth

I believe one of the big auction/gun sales sites--might be Gunsinternational--has a 4  3/4" Colt SAA in .44 Spl, re-done by Turnbull.  As I remember, it's de-nickeled, now with truly beautiful case colors, even the hammer, and carbona blued. Somebody oughta be packing that beauty around.

Best of luck on your quest.

Right Site

Bill:

It's the right site. Look under the Colt Single Action Army 3rd Generation list. It's a few pages in. But now I gotta come clean and admit that since my earlier post I've inquired by email whether they'll let me put in on layaway and pay if off over three months.  Get there fast....

Good luck to ya.

Colt New Frontier

I haven't looked lately but a while back I asked a local dealer about the availability of the latest NF in both 44 Spec and 45 Colt. She told me the distributer had several of each barrel length and caliber all at a price of about $1200 or so. That's not a bad price and I don't know if it still holds or not but if you want a Colt NF it shouldn't be hard to find one at a dealer in your area. I think list price was $1500.00. Chris

It might be heresy to say

It might be heresy to say here but I can't figure out why anyone would buy a Colt SAA and pay enough for it to buy three Rugers. I'd take a look at the various .44 Special chambered Rugers and pick your favorite barrel length and grip style. They come in both traditional grip shape and in a Bisley style as well.
Admittedly, a DA wheelgun is more likely to get my attention over that of a SA. While that is true, I finally found a grip shape / style of grips / stocks that makes a SA work well in my hands. Nothing fancy about it, it's a Ruger Bisley Super Blackhawk in .45 Colt with a 5.5" barrel and a fairly thick set of smooth micarta stocks. I've been tempted by one of the .44 Special short barreled Bisley and wouldn't pass up the chance to shoot one if I ran into someone on the range who had one but the smaller size just doesn't seem to point as well for me as the Super Blackhawk Bisley with the medium length barrel. Because of that I just haven't put my toy money in to buying one yet even though I like .44 Special wheelguns.

Not Heresy!

Don't worry Jim, we allow everyone to choose his or her own gun and model etc. without any hard feelings. You are correct that the Colt NF costs a lot more than a Ruger but it's the beauty of being able to choose that makes buying a gun a fun time. As to my preference for Colt or Ruger, I own both, why limit yourself to just one. Chris

Nope, Not Heresy

Jim:
I usually talk myself out of a Colt SAA using pretty much the same argument you use,  though I usually end up with S&Ws, not Rugers. But still, there's nothing like a Colt SAA or NF. I'd say Rugers are more practical. Generally if you want more than practicality you gotta pay for it.

It's a good deal that we get to pick and choose.

I was going to buy the Ruger

I was going to buy the Ruger .44 special and it's a great revolver but I've had a crush with the New Frontier for a long time. I've decided that instead of the Ruger I'm going to save what I'd spend on the Ruger plus my overtime money and get the gun of my dreams. Yes, I'll have to save for 12 or 13 months to get it but I think the discipline involved with saving instead of the instant gratification of the Ruger, will make the purchase that much sweeter.
I don't think I'd kick the USFA out of bed either. That might be a tough choice when my funds are available.
