out of a .45 Colt 4 5/8 Ruger NMBH . I have been over loading tables read Johns info and and can't find any loads that will give me 850-900 fps using a 255 or 260 grain Kieth bullet. If any of you have a load and don't want to post it a pm would be welcomed. Everything I have found is usually a test barrel,7 1/2 , or 6' barrel  data. Thanks

Charlie

Hello

Probably need to get a chrony and work up a load. Let us know. Might try to get a message to Mr. Taffin via the sixguns.com guest book, he is good about answering.

900 fps

Gascheck;
I was just reading an article in a 1970 Handloader about the 45 Colt. One of the loads mentioned was 10.0 gr. Unique with a Lyman 454424 bullet. I use 16.5 gr. 2400 Also. Those should get you in the ball park.

Don't worry. Be happy.

Sounds like a bunch of women

in a game of hearts after church services with all the snickering. It was GUNS AND AMMO  nice load using blue dot. I looked through a couple dozen old mags , some of them Shooting Times, and was reading several articles from someone who doesn't snicker just writes things about sixguns and reloading them without snickering much. Have any hearts??? Thanks for the positive feed back from mworkmansr and admin.

???

I have used both Blue and Ref Dots, but I keep coming back to Unique. If I want major horsepower out of my S&W 1950, I use 16.5 gr. 2400. Hits like a piledriver, and lights up the sky at night.

Don't worry. Be happy.

Not meaning to sound

Not meaning to sound defensive, trying to be informative here. If you look around you might find I have done a bit of writing about sixguns and a bit of reloading here and you might find that SIXGUNNER has dabbled in the field a little bit, or so rumor has it , as well. It is merely that Keith was so well known for what he DID and didn't do that keeping the record straight on the internet, where misinformation circles the globe in a flash, is, for me at least, something to strive for.

Toughen up and loosen up a bit, we're all friends here and I never knew friends that didn't josh each other from time to time.

gain some info regarding the subject. I've done some shooting my self raised in Africa and hunted all of em and then some, but I don't make fun of people , bad manners and all that. If this is how this forum is run then have fun and snicker all you silly little buggers want.

Confusion?

Perhaps it would help to remember that Elmer wrote mostly for Guns & Ammo magazine with some in the American Rifleman and not sure if he wrote in Shooting Times. Skeeter Skelton wrote for ST I think, but I don't think anyone was critical of your inquiry about loads etc. Like Mike said, we all tend to be easy going but maybe kid a bit when we are in a fanciful mood. If you are interested in more Elmer Keith articles check out the other forum at .....http://sixgun-forums.com/ElmerKeith/forum... under the ..http://www.elmerkeithshoot.org/GA/....at the top

FOR THE RECORD

ELMER KEITH WROTE FOR SEVERAL EARLY MAGAZINES BUT MOSTLYAMERICAN RIFLEMAN. WENT TO GUNS EARLY ON AFTER THEY ARRIVED IN 1955 THEN SWITCHED TO G&A WHERE HE STAYED UNTIL HIS STROKE IN 1981. SKEETER'S FIRST ARTICLES WERE IN GUNS ALSO THEN SOME STUFF FOR GUNSPORT AND GUN WORLD THEN SWITCHED TO SHOOTING TIMES AROUND MID-60s WHERE HE STAYED UNTIL HIS PASSING IN 1988..

850-900 FPS

DEPENDING UPON BARREL LENGTH, B/C GAP, ETC. 8.0-9.0 GRAINS OF UNIQUE SHOULD WORK.

45 Colt Loads

Gascheck,
There are several potential powders out there for your purpose; Power Pistol, Clays, Universal, Unique, and 2400 are about the best due to less case sensitivity, but Accurate No.7, and even No.5 can work as well. None of these powders are particularly difficult to ignite. Loads will vary with each powder, but since today its pretty challenging to get a specific powder, you might make a short list when you set out to find what you can use. I've also heard some good things about Trail Boss, but it may not get you to your target velocity.
I've used the standard Unique load of 9.0 grs. for so long now, that it has become old hat. You can load it down to 8.0 grs., like Sixgunner says. Standard primers work great, and accuracy has always been above normal for me.
Mike's claim of 16.5 grs. of 2400 is a strong load, and a time proven standby. Its impossible to double charge the case with this one, but sometimes this load generates more than 900 fps., especially in tight tolerance guns.
850-900 fps is actually the top end for traditional .45 Colt loads. Military loads were standard at 750 fps. I've seen a couple old cartridge boxes where these .45 Colt velocities were listed, the last being for the Colt model 1909. If you were interested in the more sedate velocity, where the recoil pulse smooths out to a hard push, rather than a wrist wrenching snap, I would definitely look up Trail Boss.
Where in Africa did you grow up?

Mix-up - oops

Sorry; When I started talking loads, I got shunted over to 44 Special, my favorite. For the 45 Colt, I use 8.0 Unique with a Lyman 250 gr. 454424 for 850 fps. FOR 2400, The 16.5 GR. would be  a normal load. The latest revision of Propellant Profiles from Wolfe Publishing list 16.5 gr. 2400 for a 259 gr. lead bullet in 45 Colt at 868 fps. Of, course, most manuals don't list 2400 for 45 Colt because Unique is a better choice.
