My Brush With Old School Wheelgun Greatness - Bob Baer

I was in Sugarland Texas last Thursday for a meeting. My appointment got pushed by a couple hours so I decided to hit up a local gun shop to see what they had.

After browsing some cases and seeing some nice old Smiths and other guns, my eyes settled on a cut down Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag. Something about the mark on the custom grips sparked my memory and sure enough... A genuine Bob Baer built snubby .44 mag single action.

While I was shocked to see the gun at all, I was more shocked to have met the man himself. He is getting up there in years but still sharp as a tack. I guess he was up at the gun shop dropping off a gun he had done some work on for them. He saw me looking at the gun and told me he had built it and used it to take some pigs and a few deer and decided to send her on down the line. I told him it was an honor to meet him. I bought the gun. I am thrilled to own something made by one of the guys that ran with the likes of Skelton, Taffin, Wootters, etc.

She is a beauty. One of a kind. Amazing. He named her "Lil Howdy" and it is stamped on the frame. It is done up in the shopkeeper style. No ejector rod housing with nail nicks for each chamber to ease out casings. He did an action job on it and the cylinder rotates both ways. Whole gun and action is slick as ice on ice.

He gave me his cell # and I hope to see him again next time I am in town.

Very nice

Now that is something special.  I've had a hankering lately for a snubby shopkeeper single action.  Looks like you got a beauty there.  Congrats and thanks for the story.  It don't get much better than that.

Not sure what's cooler, the gun or the story. Think maybe it's a "draw". Thanks for sharing both with us. Very, very cool indeed!

I congratulate you on your

I congratulate you on your excellent taste. All other considerations aside it is fine work of art in its own right. You are a wise man to have recognized the opportunity and the circumstances and to have "seized the moment". Would that I had your foresight and taste in my youth, I would have a particular big bore revolver myself instead of regrets because I don't.
Well done sir!

Thanks Gentlemen. If I had one regret, it is that I did not have someone snap a picture of me and him together with the gun. I have to go back to Sugarland on January 2nd. I will be hunting for another one of his guns at that shop.
Business is good and I may as well convert some of these worthless Federal Reserve Notes for something of real value :)

Merry Christmas everyone!
