Welcome to the forum. Chris
Thanks for the welcome. I only discovered this webpage recently. I have been a big fan of Mr. Keith's since I first started to research the 44 mag back in the 80's. I love the 44 mag and have owned (bought new)one since 1991, the revamped Smith & Wesson Model 29 Classic. Excellent gun, with more than 1800 rounds through it and works like a dream.
Things are different here in NS compared with the States in regard to using a handgun but we still have fun with them and shoot them whenever we can.
Nova Scotia is very pretty, I sailed past it but never got to visit, but the pictures are very inviting. Tell me briefly about the gun laws. I hear varying tales about what is legal and what isn't. I was under the impression that to own a handgun you had to keep it at some armory or Police depot and had to have permission to shoot it. What about the new administration saying they would ease gun restrictions, so many questions I know but maybe just a brief summary would do. Thankyou very much in advance if you take the time to explain. I think I have relied on second hand info too much. Chris

Canada's current gun law's are horrible. It started with one isolated crazy man with a high powered rifle who was driven to his actions by two things: 1) he was a mental case, and 2) the women he attended school with bullied him until he broke. So, instead of making it about the truth the politicians made it about violence against women and took it out on farmers and hunters and handgunners.
Here's essentially how it breaks down: 1. All firearms must be centrally registered for a one time fee (which fee can at the government's whim become an annual fee or the guns will be confiscated), 2. Handguns were already registered under the restricted firearms law from 1964 (approx.)then the new law required them to be re-registered, 3. under no circumstance can canadians own automatic weapons, 4.under the new law a woman has only to complain she is in fear of you and if the police check the registry and you have firearms, bang the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or local police force can take your firearms, regardless if you have done anything wrong, 5. if you have had a marital or conjugal relationship break down when it's time to renew your license the officals can deny you your license and confiscate your firearms, regardless whether or not you have done anything wrong, 6. you cannot shoot on your own land unless you have a legally registered gun range which is extremely difficult to obtain, 7. handgun ownership is very restricted and to shoot you must belong to a gun club and only shoot on the club's range, 8. no hunting with a handgun, 9. guns are stored at one's own home but under lock and key and the ammo must be stored separately under lock and key, 10. if not stored this way and the police attend your home for any reason your firearms will be confiscated and you will be charged criminally, 11. when hunting you must carry a firearms possession card (size of driver's license), plus all paper work that shows registration plus there is a sticker you are supposed to apply to your firearms but then it falls off when wet, so hardly anyone has the stickers on their firearms.
There are vast problems with the registry: firearms registered to the wrong people, firearms registered multiple times wherein it appears an individual will have more guns then he does in reality, oh, we mustn't forget criminals don't register their guns. Therefore, there has been nothing accomplished by the registry except government jobs created, lawful citizens treated as criminals and mass confusion. Additionally, the government now is proposing to confiscate and outlaw automatic and semi-automatic shotguns, goodbye duck hunting for many people, back to the pump.
So, you all in the US, never agree to a central registry or anything like what we have here, it is unfair and extremely dangerous with the ultimate consequence of confiscation. The movement here is to have the long gun registry destroyed legally and maintain a handgun registry. Our current leader, Stephen Harper is a stand up guy and has been trying to accomplish this.
I hope this answers some of your questions. I am pleased to answer all you have if I can.
WOW, in a word.... I had no idea of all that... We here in the U.S. at least enjoy a somewhat free possession of firearms although each state has it's laws regarding handguns (California and Illinois worst) and some cities(NYC, Chicago) have outright bans on handguns even though it is now supposed to be overturned by recent Supreme Court cases. In Michigan long guns are pretty much unrestricted but handguns are registered with the Sheriff aand State Police. I guess we take our freedom for granted most of the time and we shouldn't. I sure appreciate the information and hope our forum members all read it.... It is eye opening... Again, Thanks... Chris
