I seem to remember Elmer doing a review of the Ithaca mag ten years ago when he went goose hunting, I think he had a favorable review. My question is "What was Elmer's favorite shotgun?" CHRIS

An Ithaca Double that he got

An Ithaca Double that he got from Charles Askins Sr. He also liked the Fox Super for long range duck hunting. Elmer wrote a book on shotguns, called SHOTGUNS. In it he covers everything.
I followed his instructions to the letter, and ran the Sporting Clays course at Nemecolin Woodlands. With a L.C.Smith Double, made for a left hander,(I am right handed). The stock has lots of cast on. No problem.
Just shows what Elmer knew. I also ran the skeet course at Longue Vue Country Club. With a Manton double, damascus barrels, double hammers, open choke.
Elmer told in the book how to run a skeet course.

Good Guns, Good Friends, and Good Whiskey. I beleive Skeeter was on to something.

Ithaca mag 10

I spoke with Ted this morning and asked him this question. He said he really liked the mag 10. He also described a day of duck hunting with Elmer. He said Elmer would mostly stay put in the brush under his "umbrella". I think he was refering to his hat. He would have Ted walk and jumpshoot and Elmer would clean up.He would shoot ducks so far out that when they hit the frozen ground the breast of the birds would bruise.I've heard him talk of Elmers shotgunning as well as his remarkable eyesight I'm sure it helped a bit, but there is no replacement for just going and shooting.

shotgun

Thanks EMK1161: I appreciate the first(or second) hand info. I should have known Elmer would like a big shotgun. I wonder what he would think of some of our newer 3 1/2 12gauges and turkey guns? Again thanks for the info, it's great. Chris

I was going by his writings

I was going by his writings in Shotguns. I guess he really did well with the big Mag for long range geese and ducks. I do not know if it was his favorite shotgun though. He spoke often about Major Charles Askins giving him a shotgun, the Ithaca. He was rubbing it into Charlie's face I think.

We need Ted to get on this

We need Ted to get on this forum. As close as we can get to the horses mouth, so to speak.
